When we read “Halloween Safety” we usually think of sick, sex offenders who use Halloween to lure unsuspecting children into their homes. There is nothing wrong to be prepared for this but we tend to overlook the fact that most Halloween accidents are unrelated to these offenses but are more on the children’s costume, car accidents and fire accidents.

We here at CardFunk who like to have as much fun as the next person in the awesome season that is Halloween, would like to give out a few reminders to everyone. Especially those who have kids.

1. If your kids are too young to be going out by themselves, make sure they have bigger kids in the group.

2. If there are no bigger kids, accompany your little ones door-to-door. If they’re too young, they wouldn’t mind their parents tagging along.

3. Make them bring glow sticks for walking around at night instead of lanterns. Lanterns may look better but it also increases the risk of fire accidents.

4. Teach kids to don’t go inside stranger’s houses and go to lots that are not well-lit. Also, in-line with this, you have to teach your kids how to go kicking and screaming if a stranger does something aggressive to them. Even though this comes out naturally, it is still a good idea to reinforce this instinct.

5. Advise your children to keep the treats in the bag and just eat it when they come home. This way you will be sure of what the kids will be getting and you will be preventing some tummyaches from bad candy. We all know what else you will be preventing though.

As the Halloween season is fast approaching, so are the movies that will take advantage of everyone’s scare-mood. Halloween is the best time to be launching horror movies since people are pretty much receptive to it. Why not? The whole point of Halloween is to be freaked out by something. Show this movie in any other day of the year and it would not have mattered as much.

The most talked about Halloween movie of 2009 is none other than Paranormal Activity. Part of us believe that the big reason why it has become so hyped up is because of the brilliant viral marketing strategy. There are quite a few films that tried to use such strategy to sell more in the box office. One of the more famous examples is the disappointing Cloverfield and the surprise hit The Blair Witch Project.

But did it really start that way? Well, not exactly. When Paranormal Activity first came out, it was doing good when it first came out. But only when they employed a brilliant internet marketing strategy did Paranormal Activity get the wildfire treatment.

Like it predecessors, PA relied on the realism of “real” footage to deliver their point across. Horror movie junkies who grew up in a Stephen King scenario would scoff at the treatment since for most people, no blood and gore = not a horror movie.

So why is PA such a hot Halloween movie for 2009?

Realism. There is now finally a horror movie director who believed in the adage “less is more”. Writer/Director Oren Peli is concerned with the fear that lurks in the subconscious. Not the ones found externally. You can show monsters to the audience, you can show them big foot, you can use the myth of Friday the 13th to scare your audience but Peli decided to use the subconscious.

These are images and events that we push right at the back of our minds because it’s easy. Because it’s completely unnecessary to brood over the trivial things. So what if the door flew open and then flew back? It’s probably just the wind.

… or the mind playing tricks again.

That is exactly it, ladies and gents. The biggest scare that you can ever get comes directly from your own mind. Not someone else’s and certainly not from a couple of writers and producers.

It’s about time that horror/suspense movies take this dramatic route. Don’t you think so too?

Face it. Nobody ever gets truly freaked out by animated Halloween cards anymore. Everything is just a tad too predictable nowadays. So instead of forcing to be scary and looking like an idiot, why don’t you go for the funny approach instead? Funny Halloween cards are safe bets because there is a slight chance that the recipient would be freaked out, and if they don’t, you can just say that it’s supposed to be funny.

1. Octomom Halloween Costume – okay so Octomom was so last decade ago but that’s what makes this Halloween costume effective. Everyone knows who Octomom is so if you show up at a Halloween party wearing a tentacle suit with babies at the end of each tentacle, you’d be welcomed with either disgust or amusement. Either way, people will be talking about you! (or throwing things at you)

2. Sperm Man Halloween Costume – superheroes have been very popular this year and the last. Most box-office hits are comic adaptations so why don’t you join in on the fun? Here’s a Sperm Man Halloween Costume and prepare to travel in between Batman and Robin. Be careful though, because ladies might not want hang with you.

3. Sexy Nemo Chick Halloween Costume – if you weren’t touched with poor lost little nemo, you are not human. So to honor this touching movie, dress up in a sexy nemo halloween costume! Perfectly logical. What do you think? What? Who CARES if you’re a dude?!

4. Sarah Palin Halloween Costume – Sarah Palin has made a remarkable contribution in the entertainment industry (oh sorry, were you expecting ‘political’?) and as such she deserves the recognition of a Halloween costume. Not only will you have the license to make political jokes all night, you will also be staying true to the “girls dress like sluts on Halloween” rule. We don’t have anything against Sarah Palin. It’s not her fault that she looks hot in that tight office skirt. Right? Right!

5. Michael Jackson Halloween Costume – One of the most iconic deaths of all time happened in 2009. And that is MJ’s death. Dressing up as MJ or better yet, as MJ Thriller Zombie will be one of the coolest things to happen in Halloween. Nobody will make fun of you. Everybody respects a tribute. Just make sure you practice all the right moves. While everybody respects a tribute, NOBODY respects a FAIL tribute.

6. Kanye West Halloween Costume – the easiest one to do in the bunch. You don’t even have to wear the ridiculous sunglasses or carry a bottle of Hennesy to pull off a Kanye West Halloween Costume. All you have to do when people ask you who you’re going as, is interrupt their question. They’ll recognize you immediately. Prepare to be punched in the face a lot for the whole night though. We all know how many people wanted to do that to Kanye.
